No reason, I just liked them! I didn’t have them at the same time; the first one got traded for the ‘87 Integra (see my edited post) when the clutch failed and I bought the ‘88 Sprint on a whim.
The ‘87 was a bare bones version. It had a radio but nothing else, not even a rear defroster. The ‘88 was damn near loaded. Rear defroster AND wiper (oh the luxury), A/C that worked but not very well in temperatures over 80 F, and even a dealer-installed cruise control. That one is also the only car that’s ever left me stranded. It threw a rod on the day after Christmas 1998, and I was only 140 miles away from home. Put in a junkyard engine and got it back on the road for another year.
So I've actually owned 19 with the Integra, and I also have a vehicle through work. It's a 2018 Ram ProMaster 3500 van that I've driven since new in March 2018. It's about to hit 80k miles.

Over the last 8000 miles t he mini hasnt been good . I t needs a new turbo due to a failure in the exhaust housing around the wastegate actuator, still makes boost but power is better some days over others. Also Valve stem seals started leaking like crazy so it billows smoke in traffic and the front lca bushings are dead.
Due to my driving it will need new tires soon aswell as new rotors with a more aggressive brake pad.
With these developments the Lexus project is on hold for a few months to get the mini on track, though nothing can be done about the valve stem seals until the sc is running.

In a fairly non-specific order ...
1991 Ford Mustang LX, 1997 Chevrolet Cavalier RS, 2003.5 Mazdaspeed Protege, 1984 VW Rabbit, 1989 Peugeot 405 Mi16 RS, 1982 Mazda RX-7, 1985 Toyota MR2, 1988 Toyota MR2 S/C, 1965 Ford Mustang, 1988 BMW 325i, 2003 Land Rover Freelander, 2003 VW Passat, 2002 Honda S2000, 1993 Subaru SVX, 1989 Ford Taurus SHO, 1995 Land Rover Discovery, 1995 Ford Escort ZX2, 2010 VW Jetta, 1984 Saab 900, 1978 Triumph Bonneville, 2001 Suzuki SV650, 2009 Honda Ruckus, 2009 Nissan Cube, 2000 Chevrolet Corvette. A few of these were daily drivers , a few race cars, a few weekend cruisers, and a couple of beaters that I hardly ever drove.
I think I’m missing a few, but oh well. I still have the Cube and the Corvette, but hopefully the Cube will be replaced soon with something more enjoyable.
But anyway, happy birthday! Drinks are on you!

I foolishly financed the mini to not have to worry about the reliability of all the $500 beaters.
Might see about getting a little farm truck from a coworker if it passes smog.
Would you recommend the legacy's? They look good especially in wagon form.

Ah, we live and we learn. I get the strong impression you know how to wrench so something simple like a farm truck sounds like a good idea to me. $2k has been a good beater limit for me so far (see Firebird and Saturn).
As for the Legacy, I have had much less trouble with mine over 6 0k miles than most people on the internet will have you believe. No issues with the turbo or head gasket problems. Though, I h ad to replace the valve cover gaskets since the turbo likes to cook the passenger side of the engine bay pretty well . I t makes for a great 4-season daily but I’m pretty bored with it at this point since it’s completely stock. Don’t know if you commute but it only gets around ~ 21 mpg.

Here’s a shocker for you: the ProMaster is the best cargo van I’ve driven. I’ve driven most of them, too. Oh sure, parts of the interior are slowly disassembling themselves and my rear door latch is about to break, but it handles cargo the best, has decent power, the transmission handles steep grades fantastically, and it’s a decent driving vehicle. I’m sure something mechanical is bound to go wrong with it, but I’m really liking it.
My average mpg is 16.752, but I routinely get 18-20 on long highway trips. If I filled the tank now (it’s currently at half) it would be a hair over 20 mpg.

It did. The E scalade actually stuck around as a 2nd towing/moving things or people vehicle from the time of the Legend until I bought the new F150. It is actually still around in a sense being that I sold it to my parents as their occasional towing/moving big things vehicle.
Come to thing of it (and speaking of fancy) , I forgot to put the 2000 BMW 528i on the li st between the miata and the vette. I feel bad, because that is probably my favorite car I’ve ever owned.

Great so far, it has the 5 speed manual (what else ) and handles pretty good with the Firestone Firehawk Indy 500's I just put on. Also has an Injen cold air intake that sounds great. Currently has 153xxx miles and still runs like a top, I got it for 3,000 so not bad especially for an almost rust free car in the northeast.
Just so you know, o il consumption is a known issue on these engines, mine only burns about a quart every 2500 miles but a friends burns a quart every 500 with only 135xxx. How do you like the Mini so far?

Nice ! Never knew they burned oil , 2500 a quart isn’t too bad though.
I love the mini and hate it, it finds exciting ways to break but there all things that wont strand you (valve stem seals, wonky wastegate, lca bushings, roached brakes ). On the other hand the pedal placement is perfect, shifts nice, great grip with rewarding handling , it pops and burbles in all the right ways. It speaks to my inner ricer.
Been eyeball ing the firehawks, are they okay in the rain?

Not a wagon, but was a factory sport package car. It was just a supremely good car all around.

Yeah, it’s not bad at all.
I’m planning on putting a better exhaust on sometime in the future to make it sound even better. S omeday when this engine dies I’m hoping to do a v6 swap too.
I’ve only driven it a couple times in the rain but they felt rock solid. I was able to go almost as fast as in the dry through a sharp corner so not bad. I can try and get a video of the corner this week if it rains.
I s the Mini stock or modded?
![]() 06/01/2019 at 23:05 |
|
No need for the video, I’m already going to go with Federal 595ss which wont be great in the rain, just wanted the info because the Lexus might run the 500's.
Yes, v6 swap with ei bach lowing springs and sti rims or something.
Mini s fairly stock, its got lowing springs , nm intake, n m catchcan, silicone charge pipe/ intake muffler delete, and a catless 2.5 stainless steel downpipe. Just removing the cat made the car plenty loud. Also the previous owner made carbon fiber covers for most of the interior and exterior trim, it seems the car was a test bed for a company called CarbonMini

They all had problems early on (not too serious) but were really just about problem free after warranty. My club had a short in the CAN bus they actually covered even though I was a bit over on miles. Not listed was also our 08 hardtop (NA). I don’t think I spent anything on it apart from normal maintenance before we traded it at about 95k.
The club had a radiator crack and the famous thermostat crack. It developed a noise in the (usually excellent) Getrag I didn’t like and got traded for the GTI ( which has had 3 multi-thousand dollar repairs)
The 13 MCS is at about 85k and has been the 2nd most reliable car on the list.
TR6 belongs to my b oss but lives at my house in exchange for full driving privileges.

Altima. By 2007 the maxima was cvt only. Altimas had a six speed until like 2010 I think. It had good get up and go thanks to the manual but mine was a poorly rebuilt salvage titled mess so as soon as I could afford something else I got rid of it.

The setup of that yard is perfection, more car space then actual house.
G etting a little worried about my trans aswell, it's starting to whine a tad louder and doesn't fall into gears quite as smooth, the cars at 107k
![]() 06/02/2019 at 00:35 |
|
I look back on them fondly
![]() 06/02/2019 at 00:55 |

House is slightly bigger than it looks but yes I love the huge garage. TR6, Jag and MINI all fit in there.
Trans in the club started making a noise around 7 8 k vaguely like a bad wheel bearing whenever under power or overrun, but was quiet when floating between (e.g. lifting slightly while cruising on level ground). Getrag problems are bad news as replacement internals are unobtainium and a whole new unit is around $5k parts. Never checked but I’m guessing junkyard finds are pretty rare too.
Never had any sign of trouble with the others, the original clutch even in the MCS is still pretty strong at 85k and it does lots of brutal rush hour traffic. (GTI started slipping at 35k)

Ok, nice. I looked at those but I already have Nokian winter tires and I heard they were kind of loud.
Definitely lowering springs and probably a turbo too.
Wow, that looks really nice with the red . I want to get a carbon fiber hood and some trim eventually, it will blend right in though.
